HISTORY
Roma, named after two previous ships and the city of Rome, was the third Vittorio Veneto-class battleship of Italy's Regia Marina (Royal Navy). The construction of both Roma and her sister ship Impero was due to rising tensions around the world and the navy's fear that only two Vittorio Venetos, even in company with older pre-First World War battleships, would not be enough to counter the British and French Mediterranean Fleets. As Roma was laid down almost four years after the first two ships of the class, some small improvements were made to the design, including additional freeboard added to the bow.
Roma was commissioned into the Regia Marina on 14 June 1942, but a severe fuel shortage in Italy at that time prevented her from being deployed; instead, along with her sister ships Vittorio Veneto and Littorio, she was used to bolster the anti-aircraft defenses of various Italian cities. In this role, she was severely damaged twice in June 1943, from bomber raids on La Spezia. After repairs in Genoa through all of July and part of August, Roma was deployed as the flagship of Admiral Carlo Bergamini in a large battle group that eventually comprised the three Vittorio Venetos, eight cruisers and eight destroyers. The battle group was scheduled to attack the Allied ships approaching Salerno to invade Italy (Operation "Avalanche") on 9 September 1943, but the news of the 8 September 1943 armistice with the Allies led to the operation being cancelled. The Italian fleet was instead ordered to sail to La Maddalena (Sardinia) and subsequently to Malta to surrender to the Allies.
While the force was in the Strait of Bonifacio, Dornier Do 217s of the German Luftwaffe's specialist wing KG 100—armed with Fritz X radio-controlled bombs—sighted the force. The first attack failed, but the second dealt Italia (ex-Littorio) and Roma much damage. The hit on Roma caused water to flood two boiler rooms and the aft engine room, leaving the ship to limp along with two propellers, reduced power, and arc-induced fires in the stern of the ship. Shortly thereafter, another bomb slammed into the ship and detonated within the forward engine room, causing catastrophic flooding and the explosion of the #2 main turret's magazines, throwing the turret itself into the sea. Sinking by the bow and listing to starboard, Roma capsized and broke in two, carrying 1,393 men—including Bergamini—down with her.

HISTORY
USS Olympia (C-6/CA-15/CL-15/IX-40) is a protected cruiser that saw service in the United States Navy from her commissioning in 1895 until 1922. This vessel became famous as the flagship of Commodore George Dewey at the Battle of Manila Bay during the Spanish-American War in 1898. The ship was decommissioned after returning to the U.S. in 1899, but was returned to active service in 1902.
She served until World War I as a training ship for naval cadets and as a floating barracks in Charleston, South Carolina. In 1917, she was mobilized again for war service, patrolling the American coast and escorting transport ships.
Following the end of World War I, Olympia participated in the 1919 Allied intervention in the Russian Civil War, and conducted cruises in the Mediterranean and Adriatic Seas to promote peace in the unstable Balkan countries. In 1921, the ship carried the remains of World War I's Unknown Soldier from France to Washington, DC, where his body was interred in Arlington National Cemetery. Olympia was decommissioned for the last time in December 1922 and placed in reserve.
In 1957, the U.S. Navy ceded title to the Cruiser Olympia Association, which restored the ship to her 1898 configuration. Since then, Olympia has been a museum ship in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, and is now part of the Independence Seaport Museum. Olympia is the oldest steel US warship still afloat. However, the Museum has been unable to fund essential maintenance for the old ship, and attempts to secure outside funding have failed. Therefore the current steward, under direction of the US Navy has put the ship up for availability to new stewards. It will take an estimated ten million dollars to put Olympia in a stable condition.
Olympia was designated a National Historic Landmark in 1966.
As of 2012, Olympia's future was uncertain; repairs are desperately needed to keep the ship afloat. Four entities from San Francisco, California, Beaufort, South Carolina, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, and Washington, DC, are vying to be a new steward, but it is a race against time due to the waterline deterioration of the hull. As the current entities are in competition for the ship, no significant repairs have been made, although the current steward has done some minor repairs. In reaction to this gap in coverage, the National Trust for Historic Preservation (NTHP) has set up a fund repository which, if funds are raised, will be directly applied to immediate repairs of the vessel with the cooperation of the current steward. At the present time, March 2012, the NTHP is considering a triple application by the Naval Historical Foundation, the Historic Naval Ships Association, and the National Maritime Association to have Olympia placed on the NTHP's list of the eleven most endangered "places". The steward applicants from San Francisco (Mare Island), and Beaufort, S.C., have endorsed the application. Despite these positive steps, Olympia is in critical danger due to the lack of funds.

USS Maine (ACR-1) is an American naval ship that sank in Havana
Harbor during the Cuban revolt against Spain, an event that became a major political issue in the United States.
Commissioned in 1895, this was the first United States Navy ship to
be named after the state of Maine. Originally classified as an
armored cruiser, she was built in response to the Brazilian
battleship Riachuelo and the increase of naval forces in Latin
America. Maine and her near-sister ship Texas reflected the latest
European naval developments, with the layout of her main armament
resembling that of the British ironclad Inflexible and comparable
Italian ships. Her two gun turrets were staggered en échelon, rather
than on the center line, with the fore gun sponsoned out on the
starboard side of the ship and the aft gun on the port side, with
cutaways in the superstructure to allow both to fire ahead, astern
or across her deck. She dispensed with full masts thanks to the
increased reliability of steam engines by the time of her
construction.Despite these advances, Maine was out of date by the time she entered service, due to her protracted construction period and changes in the role of ships of her type, naval tactics and
technology. It took nine years to complete, and nearly three years
for the armor plating alone. The general use of steel in warship
construction precluded the use of ramming without danger to the
attacking vessel. The potential for blast damage from firing end on
or cross-deck discouraged en échelon gun placement. The changing
role of the armored cruiser from a small, heavily armored substitute
for the battleship to a fast, lightly armored commerce raider also
hastened her obsolescence. Despite these disadvantages, Maine was seen as an advance in American warship design.Maine is best known for her loss in Havana Harbor on the evening of
15 February 1898. Sent to protect U.S. interests during the Cuban
revolt against Spain, she exploded suddenly, without warning, and
sank quickly, killing nearly three quarters of her crew. The cause
and responsibility for her sinking remained unclear after a board of
inquiry investigated. Nevertheless, popular opinion in the U.S.,
fanned by inflammatory articles printed in the "yellow press" by
William Randolph Hearst and Joseph Pulitzer, blamed Spain. The
phrase, "Remember the Maine! To hell with Spain!", became a rallying cry for action, which came with the Spanish–American War later that year. While the sinking of Maine was not a direct cause for action, it served as a catalyst, accelerating the approach to a diplomatic impasse between the U.S. and Spain.The cause of Maine's sinking remains a subject of speculation. In 1898, an investigation of the explosion was carried out by a naval
board appointed under the McKinley Administration. The consensus of the board was that Maine was destroyed by an external explosion from a mine. However, the validity of this investigation has been
challenged. George W. Melville, a chief engineer in the Navy,
proposed that a more likely cause for the sinking was from a
magazine explosion within the vessel. The Navy's leading ordnance
expert, Philip R. Alger, took this theory further by suggesting that
the magazines were ignited by a spontaneous fire in a coal bunker.
The coal used in Maine was bituminous coal, which is known for
releasing firedamp, a gas that is prone to spontaneous explosions.
There is stronger evidence that the explosion of Maine was caused by an internal coal fire which ignited the magazines. This was a likely
cause of the explosion, rather than the initial hypothesis of a
mine. The ship lay at the bottom of the harbor until 1911. A
cofferdam was then built around the wreck. The hull was patched up
until the ship was afloat, then towed to sea and sunk. The Maine now
lies on the sea-bed 3,600 feet (1,100 m) below the surface.
